Chicago. She is the founder and creative director of Fata Morgana Press, an experimental studio operating at the intersection of printing, art, and design. At Fata Morgana, Butler works with small businesses, cultural institutions, and community organizations to translate their ideas into compelling printed and digital communications. Through process-driven offset and letterpress printing, her art practice investigates the relationship between modes of production and the environment. It contains hundreds of cyanotype prints developed using the water in Lake Michigan to address the complicated relationship between nature and the city. An edition of 150 books, including a special edition of 25 books covered with handmade paper, was printed on the Heidelberg GTO offset press at the Center for Book, Paper &amp; Print. Ink color and density were adjusted on press. As a result, each book in the edition is unique. By intervening in the offset printing process, the printed sheets continue to evolve and change, similar to the incessant motion of the Lake itself. <img width="901" height="827" width_o="901" As offset printing fades into obsolescence, the book documents the spaces and people involved in offset printing in Chicago. The ice fishermen gather on the frozen lake over a former U.S. Steel harbor. On a three degree day, I went fishing alongside the thirty or so people at the harbor, conducted interviews, and took photographs.
